The Importance of Saving

Saving money monthly cannot be over emphasized. From a financial standpoint, it is advisable to save between 10 -20 percent of your monthly income. This percentage is not etched on stone, it can be adjusted to suit different financial situations, but the point here is to cultivate a savings habit and possibly do it monthly.

The word “savings” has a lot of definition from different sources, but one particular one gets my attention, it says “savings is the act of paying yourself”. Considering a lot of money is spent while purchasing goods and services, indirectly paying others, it is only appropriate that you pay yourself too. Just in case you are wondering what the fuss about savings is, let’s take a look at these few points as to why saving is important.

Reasons for Saving Money

  • Unforeseen circumstances/emergencies: Things happen daily which are beyond our control that can cause a lot of inconvenience. For instance, your child could take ill, your vehicle could break down or your home might need some fixing. With a savings plan, you have the resources to attend to these situations.  There are cases where you could turn a blind eye to these emergencies, but there are others that must be tended to.
  • Without a savings plan or savings, these situations could pose a huge challenge.  Sometimes, getting out of an emergency mess could take as much as three to six months’ worth of income, amounts required to sort out these kind of situations or purpose should not be included in your savings if there was no savings originally.
  • Debit Card Debts –  People struggle with debit card debts, without a proper monthly savings plan, you can find yourself in such situations. Oftentimes, what is spent on debit card debts could be a meagre sum compared to what is spent on unforeseen circumstances or emergencies. Having a proper monthly saving plan could ease these debts and give you a good credit card rating.
  • If you are like me and likes to spoil yourself, with a good monthly savings, you could easily afford some luxury without breaking your bank account or putting a hole in your pocket. Thinking of taking a break and going for a vacation, or even getting a car, then Saving is your best bet. I can’t stress this enough.  Just Save! If you feel you can’t set aside the 10-20 percent of your income, there are other ways to save.  For example, I save every $1, $5 bills that I received–from the beginning of the year. This has allowed me to put aside a few hundreds in the bank by end-of-year.  Another way is to start a weekly savings plan.  See below image as an example.

    • Carol,
Same here, which is why I am using the 52 week savings plan and saving every $1 or $5 bills. This approach is working for me. YOu can also just put aside the $1 in a envelope…I never touch it for anything. Thanks for your comment.

  1. I agree with your outlook on what it takes in achieving financial wellness.
Having multiple streams of income is definitely important. Some people say I am cheap, but I am just smart with my money because as you mentioned unforeseen circumstances happen which can effect your way of life. I have definitely been hit this year with a couple of circumstances that has forced me to adjust to certain changes.

Do you have any suggestion how to create a budgeting habit and stick to it.
Thanks for sharing, and plan to check in, and see where you go next.

    • From experience, its really easy to make a budget, but quite difficult to stick with it. My trick is, if its not on my budget, I will not spend it. This took me a few years to get to this point…because I am a spender…for instance I walk in the grocery store to pick up milk, and I walk out with a shopping cart full of groceries that we really don’t need. Will power my friend is what you need. Thanks for visiting.
